Key takeaways from the DFC Domain Name Summit.
Domain names on Web3 blockchains are more like addresses for data, for things like wallets, and for content (e.g. IPFS addressing). You may have seen .eth .wallet. .stars. Most don't ever interact with the traditional Domain Name System. But some do. Let @chjango explain. 📽️ 2/ pic.twitter.com/pDVF2psDbA

Our experts quickly pointed out that there is no policy framework for Web3 domain addresses. ⚖️ For some, that's a good thing. @kurtopsahl @FilFoundation argued that decentralized systems are a good thing for freedom of expression, censorship resistance, and diversity. 3/ pic.twitter.com/TDrToqDWvp

.@chjango contrasted the advantages of decentralized addressing systems with ICANN's process. She said whereas creating a new ICANN TLD can cost $millions and take decades, Web3 systems are more democratic and allow for more innovation. 4/ pic.twitter.com/xnpdYnB7Tx

An audience member warned that "Wild West" of these blockchain addressing systems is coming to an end, and quickly. ⚠️ The ABA's IP section has already called on Congress to apply UDRP protections to these addressing systems, lawmakers on the Hill are looking askance. 5/

Domain Name rules of the road were established pretty early at the start of ICANN. Congress passed the Anti Cybersquatting Protection Act as ICANN spun out of the Department of Commerce. UDRP was adopted at ICANN's first meeting. No such regulations exist for Web3 domains. 6/

Not surprisingly, our experts identified Intellectual Property issues and CSAM images as the first likely pain points for Web3 domain names. 7/

📢 Christian Dawson from the i2 Coalition calls for a light touch regulatory environment in the Web3 domain space. Let innovation flourish while addressing harmful impacts. 8/ pic.twitter.com/6rvJvcNGTw

The audience was chock-full of officials from many of the US government's leading enforcement and regulatory agencies. My last takeaway was that it's a matter of time before the blockchain and Web3 communities will need to hash out some rules of the road for domain names. 9/9
